Should You Decorate The Office During the Holidays

Many people decorate their offices this time of year. Is it something you want to do?  Should you decorate the office this year? From my experience, if you are the boss or business owner, the owner, not the employee, should make up the rules.

If you don’t feel that the office is the right place for decorations, then make it known in writing that there are no decorations. You can also tell your employees at the weekly meeting.  Or, if you are OK with a few small statues or a particular type of decoration that represents the holiday to each employee, make it known to everyone what kind of decorations you prefer and what area they can decorate.  Not all decorations are proper for all office spaces.

Here are some tips on creating your office decorations that won’t offend:

Don’t allow objects that would offend other religions. 

Use Happy Holidays or Seasons Greetings instead of Merry Christmas if you don’t know what everyone’s religion is. 

Make the decorations non-religious and straightforward. Use things like stars, angels, Santa, etc… 

Use tasteful fresh or fake garland around railings and steps.

Line the entryway of the office silk or new poinsettia plants.

Decals you can place on the windows or walls. If you have lots of windows, there are non-damaging decals available to make their own wall Christmas Trees. 

Create a holiday-themed image on your computer and share it with your employees. They can use it as a desktop image so everyone can have the same holiday desktop. 

Create a holiday-themed screensaver and share it with your staff.

Decorating your office benefits the staff by boosting morale and helping people feel better overall.
